Invisalign Vs Metal Braces

You might be surprised to learn that at Soft Touch Dental, among the many services we provide, we also do orthodontics!  This means that in addition to overseeing your general and cosmetic dentistry needs, we can also help straighten your teeth and correct your bite.

When we begin the discussion of orthodontics with our patients, one of the questions we hear most often is, “What is the difference between Invisalign and metal braces?”

Great question.  Although both are orthodontic dental treatments that help straighten teeth and enhance smiles, each has different advantages.  Take a look below at the pros and cons of Invisalign and metal braces, and decide which choice might be right for you.

Invisalign

Invisalign treatment consists of a set of clear plastic, computer-generated trays that fit snugly over your teeth. They are worn 24 hours a day, removed only to eat and brush/floss your teeth. Every two weeks, for 6 months to a year, one tray is switched out for a new one.

Advantages of Invisalign

As the name suggests, the trays are nearly invisible.

Trays are removable. So…

  • No food restrictions
  • You can brush and floss normally
  • Easy to clean
  • Comfortable
  • No wires
  • Trays do not affect speech
  • It works!
  • Great for straightening teeth
  • Fixes simple alignment issues

Disadvantages of Invisalign

  • Removable trays must be worn 24 hours a day to be effective. This requires a self-discipline that may be difficult for some people.
  • Cannot fix more complex bite and alignment issues.

Metal braces

Metal braces consist of small brackets affixed to the teeth and connected by a wire. They are not removable except by a dental professional. They are worn for an average of 2 years, with follow-up adjustments every 4 to 6 weeks.

Advantages of braces

  • Not removable, so no temptation to skip a day.
  • Great for complex cases
  • Gaps
  • Malocclusion (crowded or crooked teeth)
  • Bad bites

Disadvantages of braces

  • Visible brackets and wires make them very noticeable.
  • Some food restrictions.
  • Wires can be uncomfortable.
