So you have decided on the Invisalign method to straighten your teeth. Congratulations! Invisalign aligners are the clear alternative to metal braces and are virtually invisible. They also make tooth and gum hygiene so much easier, which means you can start smiling right away! Here are some tips on caring for your Invisalign retainers.
The set of retainers you have been given need to be cared for properly so that they last for the full term of your treatment. To care for your retainers:
Remove the retainer from your mouth and rinse with tepid water. Tepid means not too hot and not too cold. Temperature fluctuation can affect the customized shape of the retainer.
Apply regular toothpaste to your retainer brush or any soft-bristled toothbrush. Use small, circular motions to gently clean the entire retainer, inside and out. Once you have completely brushed the retainer, rinse again with tepid water.
Inspect your retainer for any sort of buildup. Just like your teeth, your retainers can get tartar (calcium) buildup on them. Calcium buildup looks cloudy white on the surface of the retainer. If this happens, soak the retainer in retainer or denture cleaning solution according to the directions on the packaging. Invisalign sells the Invisalign Cleaning System, available from your dentist or the Invisalign website.
Once you have cleaned your Invisalign retainer, you can place it back inside your mouth.
Do not soak your retainers in mouthwash, as it can stain your retainers, making them visible.
Clean your retainers each time you brush your teeth. Trapped plaque and food particles can lead to tooth decay.
Never use hot water on your retainers. This can ruin the customized shape, causing them not to fit properly.
When you move on to the next set of retainers, thoroughly clean the previous set and store it in its case. In some instances, patients can be instructed to go back to wearing a previous retainer.
It is important to keep all of your Invisalign retainers in top condition for the duration of your treatment.
