Keeping your gums healthy is an essential part of a proper oral care routine. Otherwise, gum disease can lead to socially embarrassing problems, such as bad breath, as well as more serious problems including tooth loss and even heart disease.
Signs of gum disease
Because gum disease can often be painless you may not automatically know you have it. So when you’re brushing and flossing, keep an eye out for:
Gums that are bleeding or swollen
Teeth that feel loose
Gums that are receding from the teeth
Pus forming around the teeth and gums
The good news is if you catch gum disease early enough, you can reverse the damage or at least halt the development of further problems.
Brush and floss regularly
Taking care of your teeth and gums begins at home. Brush at least twice a day, reaching all the way down to the gums while you do. Also be sure to floss at least once a day to remove trapped food from between the teeth.
Use the right toothpaste and mouthwash
It’s important to use toothpaste and mouthwash with fluoride. Many mouthwashes also offer extra protection against gingivitis and slow tartar buildup. Use products that carry the seal of the American Dental Association.
Get regular professional cleanings
Not only will seeing your dentist regularly help remove plaque and tartar from your teeth, but your dentist will also be able to recognize the early stages of gum disease. It’s during these early stages that gum disease is more easily treatable and can be halted or reversed before too much damage is done to the root system of the teeth.
Address bite issues
Your dentist may find you have a misaligned bite or signs that you’re grinding or clenching your teeth. Having these issues fixed or treated reduces pressure put on the teeth, and subsequently the gums, and can lead to better gum health.
Tobacco leaves a sticky residue on teeth that’s hard to remove and can make gum problems worse. Quitting smoking is a good move for both your oral health and your overall health as well.
