Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are one of the most effective ways of preventing tooth decay. Thin plastic films are painted on the chewing surfaces of premolars, molars and any other deep grooves, often referred to as "pits" and "fissures." At Soft Touch Dental, your dentist will administer sealant that protects your teeth by sealing deep grooves thus creating a smooth and easy to clean surface.

This procedure can help prevent decay for many years but will need to be examined regularly for wear and chipping.

When Do You Require Dental Sealants?

Children and teenagers are prone to cavities between the ages of 6 and 16. Once the six-year molars (first permanent back teeth) appear, dental sealants can be considered as an option to prevent tooth decay.

What Does The Dental Sealants Procedure Involve?

It is a simple procedure and usually takes a couple of minutes for each tooth. The teeth are thoroughly cleaned and kept dry before a special solution is applied to the enamel that helps the sealant bond to the teeth. Lastly, the sealant material is carefully painted on the enamel's surface to cover deep grooves or depressions. While most sealant materials harden automatically, certain sealant materials may need special curing light.

Dental sealant treatment should be followed by proper home care, a balanced diet, and regular dentist visits in order to maintain their effectiveness in fighting tooth decay.
