Porcelain Inlays and Onlays

Porcelain inlays and onlays

Porcelain inlays and onlays are restorations that help repair decay or fractures. Porcelain is preferred as it resembles teeth's natural color. These partial crowns can replace large amalgam fillings. When the new material bonds with the tooth’s center, then the term “inlay” is used. If the tooth’s total surface or cusps need to be bonded, then the term “onlay” is employed.

At our dental clinic, we prepare porcelain inlays and onlays in our state-of-the-art dental laboratory and cement them permanently into the teeth. Porcelain inlays and onlays are one of the more conservative treatments in repairing teeth with large defective fillings or ones damaged by decay or trauma. They are an alternative to conventional silver and other composite fillings.

Like most other dental restorations, inlays/onlays can enhance your smile for 15 years or more; however, they aren’t always permanent and may require replacement.

Benefits of porcelain inlays/onlays:

  • Color matches tooth coloring perfectly for a natural look
  • Conserves as much of the healthy remaining tooth as possible
  • More aesthetically attractive than metal fillings
  • They feel more like authentic teeth, more comfortable
  • Easy to clean
  • Resistant to staining
  • They bolster and fortify weakened teeth
  • Long-lasting, durable

What does the porcelain inlay/onlay restoration procedure involve?

A porcelain inlay/onlay restoration usually requires two sittings. In your first sitting, we would take a mold of your teeth, which helps us create your custom inlay/onlay. Any decay and/or old filling materials are then removed from your teeth.

Once the space has been thoroughly cleaned, it is shaped and prepared for the porcelain inlay/onlay. This is followed by a temporary filling that protects your teeth while the inlay/onlay is prepared.

On your second appointment, the new inlay/onlay is cemented into place.  Adjustments can be made to ensure a proper fit and comfortable bite.
